CRM 2011 Outlook Client will not display contact list

  
  
  

Recently most of our internal users were complaining that the only way they could access contacts in our CRM system was to open the account and then choose the contacts link on the account.  This was not happening to me on my PC, but virtually every other user in the office was experiencing this same problem.

When the user would click on 'Contacts' from the 'Sales' section or any other major section in the Outlook client, an error would appear that said "Retrieval of a page from a CRM server failed due to an error".  This was a problem only in the Outlook client...the web client would display the contact views just fine.

We tried uninstalling and reinstalling the client.  This did not solve the problem.  Then I remembered that we had just installed a customization onto our CRM system and that it was at about the same time we installed this customization that the issue manifested itself with our internal users.

So I checked the views in the Contact area of our CRM system and discovered that there were no views that were set as a 'Default' view any longer.  I set 'Active Contacts' as the default view from the Actions menu, published the changes, and the problem was solved.

I am not sure what caused the default view to become disabled but picking one and resetting it as the default view in CRM solved my problem.  I suspect that the reason why I was able to access Contacts in Outlook was that I had actually 'pinned' the 'Active Contacts' view in my Outlook client.

Anyway, I hope that my solution to this problem helps others out there in the community.
